I counted myself lucky to see an exhibition of El Greco’s work at the Met in New York a few years back. Generally I am not a fan of art from that time period but I found myself riveted to each and every painting. It was as if the people in his paintings were alive, standing in front of me, and in some cases looking straight through me. It was a truly amazing experience. If ever you have the opportunity please see his work live.
El Greco (1541 – April 7, 1614) was a painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. “El Greco” (The Greek) was a nickname,[a][b] a reference to his Greek origin, and the artist normally signed his paintings with his full birth name in Greek letters, Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος (Doménikos Theotokópoulos).
